Your garage door motor is probably a battery backup motor and this means that the electric motor is very small, being either 12v or 24v. The gearbox connected to the electrical motor is just as small and when the garage door gets to heavy from the garage springs loosing the pulling force over time, this puts strain on your garage motor as the springs are not enough force anymore, leaving the extra weight for the motor to pull the door. This will damage the motor causing you to pay for garage motor repairs and this could have been avoided by doing maintenance on your garage door. 

Another good part of maintenance is your garage door company checking to see if any type of insects or rodents have made a nest in your garage motor which one never takes the time to do. 

When your garage door gets to heavy from the springs loosing tension it puts strain on all the hinges and with steel garage doors it can cause tears and eventually you will have to replace the panels which makes for costly garage door repairs, this is unnecessary if the garage door was maintained.
